60-second guide
Before you send.
Use this when a message feels tense, important, or easy to regret.
- 01
What is the actual point?
In one sentence, what do you need them to know or do? If you cannot say it in one sentence, the draft probably needs another pass.
- 02
What can be cut?
Cut blame, sarcasm, "always" and "never," old history they already know, and anything that is only there to vent. Keep the deadline, boundary, request, or fact.
- 03
Choose the strategy.
Clear states the point plainly. Warm protects the relationship. Firm protects the boundary. Minimal keeps only what must be said.
- 04
Read it as them.
Will they understand what you need? Does it sound like an attack? Will they know what to do next? If the draft creates more confusion or defensiveness than it solves, change it.
- 05
One last check.
Is there a real next step or timeline? Are you asking a question you actually want answered? Would you be okay seeing this forwarded? If not, fix the draft first.
